FuelCell Energy Celebrates 8 Million MWH of Clean Power Generation

  • Significant milestone in FuelCell Energy’s production of clean, innovative solutions
  • Enough ultra-clean power to offset about 13 billion pounds of carbon dioxide emissions
  • SureSource™ power plants solve energy, environmental and business-related power generation challenges for utility companies and commercial clients globally

DANBURY, Conn., Sept. 19, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- FuelCell Energy, Inc. (Nasdaq: FCEL), a global leader in delivering clean, innovative and affordable fuel cell solutions for the supply, recovery and storage of energy, today announced reaching a significant clean power generation milestone with a total of more than eight million megawatt hours having been generated by SureSource™ fuel cell power plants globally since the first commercial installation. SureSource™ plants are currently installed and operating on three continents, with many owned by leading utility companies from around the world that recognize the benefit of clean, continuous power. FuelCell Energy is a global leader committed to environmentally responsible power solutions.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), eight million megawatt hours of clean energy production is enough to offset about 13 billion pounds of carbon dioxide emissions and adequate to power over 725,000 average size US homes for one year, 1,800,000 German homes for one year or 2,235,000 South Korean homes for one year. FuelCell Energy’s SureSource™ fuel cells have a low carbon footprint. The high efficiency of SureSource™ power plants contributes to favorable economics through lower fuel consumption as fuel cell power plants generate more power from a given unit of fuel than similar size internal combustion-based power generation. Our power plants are up to 60 percent electrically efficient and can achieve total thermal efficiency up to 90 percent in a combined heat and power (CHP) configuration, depending on the application.

The stationary fuel cell power plants manufactured by FuelCell Energy are the most experienced and fuel flexible available, capable of operating on clean natural gas or renewable biogas. These megawatt-class power plants are scalable for multi-megawatt applications with large power users or electric grid support. The power plants provide continuous power that is not dependent on the weather or time of day.

“We're proud of the progress we've made developing our fuel cell solutions and we remain committed to maintaining our leadership in bringing our advanced technology to the global marketplace," said Chip Bottone, President and Chief Executive Officer, FuelCell Energy, Inc. "We make cleaner and more energy-efficient electrical power systems, not only for stationary power generation and long-duration storage but also for carbon capture and distributed hydrogen applications.”

The complete line of carbonate SureSource™ products from FuelCell Energy delivers ultra-clean distributed power 24 hours a day, seven days a week – efficiently and economically. Additionally, many installations act as a microgrid, supplying predictable ultra-clean power to the electric grid under normal operation and then automatically switching to a grid-independent mode in the event of a grid disturbance. These fuel cell solutions provide distinct advantages over other forms of distributed power generation, including high efficiency with fuel conversion efficiency unsurpassed in the industry, fuel flexibility with the ability to operate on readily available natural gas or renewable biogas, and virtually no pollution as SureSource™ plants emit only trace levels of nitrogen oxide (NOx), sulfur oxide (SOx) or particulate matter.

SureSource™ power plants solve energy, environmental and business-related power generation challenges by providing ultra-clean, efficient and reliable distributed power generation.  The fuel cells combine a fuel such as renewable biogas, directed biogas or clean natural gas with oxygen from the ambient air to efficiently produce ultra-clean electricity and usable high quality heat via an electrochemical process. Customers benefit with operating cost reductions delivered in a manner that supports sustainability goals and enhances power reliability.  With high availability and capacity factors, fuel cell power plants make meaningful contributions to Renewable Portfolio Standard targets.
