Welcome to another edition of Roaming with Randy, where we take you on unforgettable journeys through some of the best events and experiences across Nebraska. This week, I’m reporting from the heart of Omaha—Charles Schwab Field—for one of the most electric events of the summer: the Men’s College World Series.

Baseball, Ferris Wheels, and Fan Fest Fun

From the moment you arrive, there’s a buzz in the air. I kicked off the day atop the Ferris wheel with a panoramic view of the stadium—a moment of calm before the storm of excitement that is Fan Fest. It’s not just baseball here. It’s food trucks, games, tailgates, interviews, and nonstop smiles from fans across the country.

Why People Come Back Year After Year

As I wandered through the crowd, I met fans who’ve made this event a summer tradition for over a decade. Some host tailgates and invite strangers-turned-friends from across the nation to share a plate and a story. Others, like lifelong locals, spoke about how the College World Series brings back memories from their youth.

“It just brings back memories it’s the best thing to look forward to,” one fan told me, his eyes lighting up.

A couple from Louisiana shared that they’ve come every year since 2011. “It’s the camaraderie,” they said. “We’ve met friends from all over—not just in Omaha, but across the country.”

Omaha: A Hidden Gem

Visitors from larger cities like Denver and Los Angeles described Omaha as “a hidden gem,” loving the small-town charm and the kindness of locals. Whether it’s your first time or your fifteenth, the hospitality here makes it feel like home.

One woman said it best: “I let everybody in. I don’t care what school you root for. I want everyone to feel like they’re at home here.”

More Than Just Baseball

Sure, baseball is the heart of it all—but the soul of this event is the experience. Fan Fest offers games for kids and adults alike (yes, I tried my hand at lacrosse and, well, let’s just say I’m a little rusty). There are interactive booths, giveaways, and even the chance to get a spray tan on-site. It’s fun, weird, and unforgettable in the best way.

A first-time visitor, wide-eyed and full of joy, summed it up: “I’ve never really been to a college baseball game before, but I really like it!”

Community, Nostalgia, and New Traditions

From food to fandom, the MCWS blends local charm with national enthusiasm. Families return year after year, making new memories while reliving old ones. Locals spoke about meeting people from places like California, Louisiana—even Hawaii back in the '70s.

And it’s not just fans. I met folks working summer gigs at the stadium who love the atmosphere just as much as the fans do. “Make that bread,” one worker laughed, “but seriously, I love the people I meet every day.”

Final Thoughts from the Field

As the sun sets behind Charles Schwab Field, it’s clear—this isn’t just a baseball tournament. It’s a celebration of tradition, connection, and America’s favorite pastime. If you’ve never been to Omaha for the Men's College World Series, take it from the dozens of voices I heard: you’ve got to come.
