The Bosnia and Herzegovina Air Navigation Services Agency (BHANSA) has successfully managed a surge in air traffic and complex operational demands following the closure of multiple Middle Eastern airspaces due to escalating regional tensions.
Airspaces over Iran, Iraq, Qatar, Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon were recently shut down amid growing security concerns, forcing numerous flights between Europe and the Persian Gulf to be urgently rerouted. This redirection triggered a ripple effect across European airspace, significantly increasing air traffic volumes over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
BHANSA reported a notable rise in the number of flights passing through the country’s airspace, especially midweek, when additional challenges such as adverse weather conditions and staffing limitations added to the operational burden.
Despite these pressures, BHANSA maintained uninterrupted air traffic control services, upholding the highest standards of safety and efficiency.
“Situations like this allow no room for error. Rapid decision-making, operational agility, and seamless international coordination are absolutely vital,” said BHANSA Director Davorin Primorac. “Our air traffic controllers and operational teams demonstrated outstanding professionalism and commitment. Even in such demanding circumstances, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s airspace remained safe and stable.”
According to EUROCONTROL's latest update, the situation is beginning to ease. Civilian air traffic has resumed over Jordan, Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon, while Iran’s airspace is expected to reopen shortly. Still, BHANSA remains on high alert, continuing to monitor developments closely and staying prepared for any further shifts in regional air traffic patterns.
Meanwhile, the ongoing crisis has not slowed the long-term upward trend in traffic over Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the first three weeks of June, flight volumes rose by 18% compared to the same period in 2024. Remarkably, this exceeds even July 2024, the previous record month, by 4%. BHANSA forecasts an additional increase of up to 20% in July and August compared to last year’s figures.
