MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) – Secretary of State Monae L. Johnson is excited to announce the 2025 Q1 South Dakota Economic Report, which was produced through a collaborative effort with Dr. Tracy Dice’s Principles of Microeconomics class at Dakota Wesleyan University.

Although the South Dakota Economic Report was originally released in 2011, it ceased publication in 2019. In an effort to “offer insights into the economic landscape of South Dakota,” Secretary Johnson partnered with Dakota Wesleyan University to make this valuable economic data available to the public once again. As a result of this effort, Secretary Johnson oversaw the release of the 2024 Q1 South Dakota Economic Report in May. Following in the footsteps of that report, the 2025 Q1 South Dakota Economic Report is the third in a long line of reports that will provide the people of South Dakota with a better understanding of the state’s economic health and development.

According to Secretary Johnson, the economy of South Dakota is built on the “unwavering spirit and resilience of South Dakotans.” Recent economic trends have illustrated the vitality of South Dakota by “telling a story of confidence and growth” amid global uncertainty. By making extensive use of data provided by the Secretary of State’s Office, particularly business filings, Dr. Tracy Dice and her students were able to analyze important economic indicators and observe the effects of “our state’s business-friendly environment, streamlined regulations, and culture of opportunity.” The 2025 Q1 South Dakota Economic Report also highlights recent economic growth in Mitchell, particularly the arrival of the $500,000,000 High Plains Processing soybean plant. Through all of the data, it is clear that “South Dakota is on the rise. Our people are strong. Our economy is growing. And our future is bright.”

Secretary Johnson invites everyone to read the 58-page 2025 Q1 South Dakota Economic Report, which can be found on the Secretary of State’s website at https://sdsos.gov/general-information/publications/default.aspx.
