LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A persistent upper-level low pressure system is lingering directly over the Bluegrass region, refusing to budge. This setup guarantees a rather unpleasant beginning to the first full week of May, which is starting out remarkably cool, with temperatures continuing to lag significantly behind seasonal averages.

Today, highs will struggle to reach the low to mid-50s across much of the area. That’s a stark contrast—roughly 20 degrees cooler—to the typical mid-70s we’d expect this time of year.

Windy showers and occasional thunderstorms will keep rotating through our vicinity today, and some could produce small hail once again. Fortunately, this activity is expected to gradually shift eastward and weaken by Tuesday.

Although the actual conditions are quite gloomy, the weather system itself presents an interesting structure on radar displays and forecast models. Looking ahead, temperatures on Tuesday should rebound into the 60-65 degree range, with some locations potentially reaching the upper 60s to near 70 degrees by Wednesday.

The forecast for later this week and into the weekend maintains the cooler-than-average theme, as another upper low is projected to affect our weather. The exact extent of its impact is still uncertain, but the possibility of scattered showers and storms remains. Regardless of precipitation chances, this pattern unfortunately continues the trend of unseasonably cold conditions. If skies become clear on Friday and Saturday mornings, temperatures could dip into the 30s, raising the possibility of patchy frost. It seems we might not break free from this cooler pattern until closer to the middle of the month.
