Romanian Music festival showcases sub- 6GHz 5G VR live streaming for Samsung and Orange

By

Korean electronics giant Samsung and Romania’s largest mobile carrier Orange have deployed a 5G New Radio (NR) network in the sub-6GHz band for one of the world’s largest electronic dance music festivals to showcase immersive real-time live streaming of performances and superfast download speeds.

The Untold Music Festival at Cluj-Napoca Central Park Arena, held this year 1-4 August, attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world each year and presented both companies with an opportunity to demonstrate the capabilities of 5G beyond faster connection speeds.

The 5G network at Untold captured and streamed spectacular visual data from 360-degree cameras on the stage and was showcased at a display stand outside the arena called the Orange VR zone.

Attendees who visited the Orange display were able to experience immersive visuals streamed from the stage in real time.

Samsung and Orange said that they also demonstrated 5G download speeds exceeding 1Gbps with half the latency of current LTE technology.

According to Samsung, the trial at Cluj Arena makes use of Samsung’s latest solutions, including 5G Massive MIMO Units (MMUs), which support the 3.4-3.8GHz frequency band.

Samsung 5G MMUs have already been rolled out across Korea by all three Korean 5G operators for use with their 5G commercial service, which launched in April of 2019, the company says.

“5G offers more than just a faster connection; it enables transformative use cases that will benefit people and businesses across the industry,” said GY Seo, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Sales & Marketing, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics.

“These joint demonstrations allow for a glimpse into the new kinds of services and capabilities that will be made possible as we unlock the potential of 5G for users across Europe.”

“With these successful demonstrations, we are showcasing the experiences that 5G can bring to Orange customers in Romania,” said Emmanuel Chautard, Chief Technology Officer at Orange Romania.

“Together with Samsung, we’re showing live network capabilities, with proof that goes beyond just impressive speeds more centered on the customer experience.”

Samsung and Orange Romania say they started their 5G collaboration in 2018 with a 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) trial in Cluj county, where Orange mobile customers became the first European users to experience at home 5G services.
